- Mrs. Julia Leemon, shown here opening the water valve on a condenser of a big vacuum pan used for boiling syrup to make sugar, is the only woman in that department at the Pennsylvania Sugar Company refinery, Delaware Ave. and Shackamaxon St. She was hired nine months ago as a boiler's helper, and despite guesses by some of the sugar house men that she would not be able to stand the heat of the boliing floor in the summer, she is still on the job and "loves it."
